Honeycomb Tablet Has 4G and 3-D - New Android Contender

For the many companies designing tablets based on Google's Android operating system to compete with Apple's dominant iPad, there are twin challenges. The obvious one is to convince consumers to buy something other than the iPad 2. It's the G-Slate, built by Korean electronics giant LG and sold by T-Mobile.

The G-Slate uses Google's standard Honeycomb software—the version of Android especially created for tablets—and is the first Honeycomb tablet in the U.S. to offer 4G cellular data speeds and 3-D video Hp dv2000 battery creation and viewing. It sports a screen size—8.9 inches—that falls between the 10-inch dimension of the iPad and the Motorola Xoom, and the 7-inch dimension used by the Samsung Galaxy Tab and the Research in Motion PlayBook.

I've been testing the G-Slate, and in my view, it performs pretty well overall—about as well as the first Honeycomb tablet, the Xoom. The 3-D feature, which requires the use of 1950s-style colored glasses, seems like a parlor trick to me. One reason for the iPad juggernaut is that the base, Wi-Fi-only, 16-gigabyte model costs just $499.

If you buy the G-Slate without a phone contract, it costs $750. The comparable iPad 2, with the same 32 gigabytes of memory offered by the G-Slate, both Wi-Fi and cellular connectivity, plus its bigger screen, is $729.

The least you can pay for the G-Slate is $530. But that price requires a two-year cellular data contract at a minimum of $30 a month, which boosts the total cost to $1,250. The iPad 2 isn't sold with a contract and doesn't require a mail-in rebate.

Another drawback to the G-Slate, and to all other Honeycomb tablets so far, is a paucity of tablet-optimized third-party apps. Apple claims 65,000 tablet apps.

This isn't to say the G-Slate has no pluses. I continue to believe that Honeycomb removes many of the rough edges and extra steps that characterize the phone versions of Android. The Honeycomb browser, unlike the iPad's, has tabs, like a PC browser.

Also, unlike the iPad Toshiba pa3465u-1brs battery , the G-Slate can handle Flash video, though not in every case I tried. It comes with a free hot-spot feature, which allows it to create a Wi-Fi signal that can power other devices, like laptops.

Its front and rear cameras are much better for still photos than the iPad's. It has stereo speakers, which the iPad 2 lacks, and another feature missing on Apple's tablet—a built-in port, called HDMI, for connection to high-definition TVs.

In my tests, with Wi-Fi turned off, the G-Slate averaged 5.79 megabits per second for downloads and 1.28 mbps for uploads. By comparison, an iPad 2 with Verizon 3G built in managed only about a fourth, or less, of those speeds over its cellular network.

The G-Slate generally performed smoothly and speedily in my tests, and handled well every app I tested. Video was smooth and vivid, though audio seemed a bit tinny and soft, despite the stereo speakers.

I like the idea of the 8.9-inch screen, which made one-handed operation easier than on a 10-inch tablet. But the G-Slate was clumsy to use in portrait mode because it is long and skinny. It's about 20% narrower than the iPad 2, but is actually a tiny bit longer, making for an odd shape.

T-Mobile and LG listed different, and inaccurate, weight specifications for the device on their websites and press materials. The heaviest iPad 2 is 1.35 pounds.

In my tablet battery HP pavilion dv6000 battery  test, where I play videos continuously with the wireless features turned on and the screen brightness at about 75%, the G-Slate lasted 7 hours and 39 minutes. That's much less than the 10 hours and 9 minutes the iPad 2 delivered in the same test. T-Mobile claims 9 hours of continuous "mixed use" of various functions. I couldn't replicate this vague type of test, but found that in light, intermittent, mixed use, the G-Slate lasted a couple of days between charges, though its screen was off much of that time.

Emailing the videos to a standard computer didn't preserve the 3-D effect, even with the glasses on. T-Mobile says a 3-D TV can display the 3-D videos, but I wasn't able to test this. Because of the glasses and the sharing limitations, I feel that this 3-D feature is mostly a marketing tool.

Bottom line: The G-Slate isn't as good a tablet as the iPad 2. I'd only recommend it for people who want the higher cellular speeds, or who prefer Android.

Samsung I9003 Galaxy SL Review

Samsung Galaxy S GT-I9003 is branded for India as Galaxy S LCD 4GB but elsewhere it is available as Galaxy SL (16GB version). Personally, I would call it a toned down substitute of Galaxy S I9000. Samsung has introduced this new Galaxy S LCD 4GB loaded with Android 2.2.1 Froyo by default. Despite clear technical differences between this handset and the Galaxy S I9000, people can’t help but compare both devices. Currently, there’s a dearth of Galaxy S I9000 handsets and the shortage of Super AMOLED displays has been cited as the main reason behind this. Obviously, Samsung has moved on to the new Super AMOLED Plus technology that is better and has been used in upcoming handset – Samsung Galaxy S II GT-I9100.

The main competitiveness from Samsung Galaxy S i9003 type is complete connectivity. File video produced has 20 seconds duration and produced 33.5 MB. Galaxy S i9003 music player has great outlook and extraordinary feature. Photo gallery in this cell phone has 3 dimension effect if you slant the mobile, so it would make your photo gallery looks prettier. This cell phone owed 4 GB internal phone storage and 16 GB internal SD card, and if you need more, you could add microSD external memory to 32 GB. Another feature provided is Reality Browser screen, an application to search place around you. The Samsung I9003 Galaxy SL is a victim of timing. At least Samsung should know perfectly well what to expect.

Samsung Galaxy SL I9003 vs. Samsung Galaxy S I9000

The first thing to notice is that there’s nothing much new to notice about the Galaxy SL. All resemblance to the original Galaxy S is entirely on purpose. The Samsung I9003 Galaxy SL has a 4” Super Clear LCD screen of WVGA resolution. Check out this next series of photos that compares the I9003 Galaxy SL display to the LG Optimus 2X screen.

The other element of interest under the I9003 Galaxy SL back panel is the 1650 mAh Li-Ion battery. An interesting detail – the new battery fits the old Galaxy S perfectly and doesn’t need a new back cover or anything.

The Samsung I9003 Galaxy SL is quite well built. The Samsung I9003 Galaxy SL runs a TouchWiz-enhanced Android 2.2 Froyo. Back in the day the company confirmed twice that the handset packs 512 MB, just like the I9003 Galaxy SL now.

Obviously the original Galaxy S has some good 138MB less amount of RAM than the new SL despite Samsung claims both have an equal amount of 512MB on board.

Moving on, the Android 2.2-running I9003 Galaxy SL brings a few new live wallpapers. The Samsung I9003 Galaxy SL packs a new TI OMAP 3430 chipset, rather than the home-brewed Hummingbird on the I9000. A typical Android smartphone, Samsung I9003 Galaxy SL has a phonebook with massive functionality and practically unlimited capacity. The handset displays the phone memory, SIM-stored and all Google contacts in the phonebook. You can search the entries by either flick-scrolling the list or using the alphabet scroll at the side of the screen (another Samsung-made feature).

The I9003 Galaxy SL searches both contact numbers and names. Thanks to the proximity sensor, your screen will automatically turn off during a call. It shows all the dialed, received and missed calls in one list sorting your call history by contacts.

As far as the text input options are concerned, the I9010 Galaxy SL GA comes with the Samsung home-backed keyboard preinstalled.

The Samsung I9003 Galaxy SL comes with the stock Froyo gallery, rather than a modified TouchWiz version. Thanks to the Galaxy SL multi-touch support pinch zooming is also available here but you can also use double tap or even the +/- buttons. The Send feature offers quick sharing via Picasa, Email apps, Bluetooth or MMS.

If video watching on a mobile is what you like to do the Samsung Galaxy SL looks like a great device for you. With powerful hardware, wide codecs support and a welcomingly large screen it’s pretty capable to say the least.

There’s DvX and XviD video support as with the rest of the Galaxy SL family.

Performance with higher-res videos is great – it played 720p videos like a champ. The video recorder also sports this option.

The Samsung I9003 Galaxy SL is equipped with an FM radio with RDS too. The user interface is standard Samsung for the most part – and that’s not a bad thing. The Samsung I9003 Galaxy SL image quality is about average for the 5 megapixel league. The Samsung I9003 Galaxy SL is capable of shooting 720p videos at 30fps. Of course that could just be an issue with our pre-release unit as both the original Galaxy SL (after the update) and the Galaxy SL Giorgio Armani had this feature.

That way you have the entire 4” screen for web browsing. The Galaxy SL browser supports two zoom methods – double tap and multitouch pinch-zooming.

The browser supports text reflow, but it works only with double tap zooming – a moment after adjusting the zoom level, columns of text adjust to fit the screen width.

One of the best parts of the I9003 Galaxy SL web browser is the full Flash support.

Playing Flash videos in Samsung I9003

The high-quality videos on YouTube and other Flash video services had some dropped frames, but the overall Flash performance turned out pretty decent.

You could use the YouTube app if you find navigating YouTube in the browser hard. The Samsung I9003 Galaxy SL comes with a GPS receiver, which locked onto satellites in about a minute with A-GPS turned off.

Our I9003 Galaxy SL came with Maps 4.5 but if you update it to version 5, you’ll get access to some great features. The I9003 Galaxy SL is on the list of devices that support all features of Google Maps 5.0 – 3D buildings (where available), two finger rotation, tilting and so on.

The Samsung I9003 Galaxy SL is running the latest available version of Android and has a WV screen, giving you access to the whole Android Market (some apps won’t run on older versions or low-res screens).

The Samsung I9003 Galaxy SL also has access to the Samsung Apps repository, where you can find some extra apps and games. The Samsung I9003 Galaxy S is a solid smartphone. The price of the original I9000 Galaxy S just can’t drop any further – considering the high production cost and short supply of AMOLED screens at this time. Plus we’ve heard that Vodafone will have the exclusive right to sell the SAMOLED Galaxies for some time, so the appearance of the Galaxy SL makes sense.

The Super Clear LCD screen makes the inevitable transition to a lower price tier. Many people will probably pick a dual-core CPU and a more recent Android version over a Super AMOLED screen. The Samsung Galaxy SL I9003 Smartphone in terms of design resembles a lot with Samsung Galaxy S i9000 smartphone featuring a large rectangle home key flanked with two touch sensitive keys on either side for menu and cancel functions. The Samsung Galaxy SL I9003 smartphone is quad-band 2G 850/900/1800/1900 MHz and tri-band 3G HSDPA 900/1900/2100 MHz ready device that is powered by Android 2.2 operating system for mobile devices and is equipped with support for Google Mobile Services, including, Gmail, YouTube, Android Market and more.

The Samsung Galaxy SL I9003 smartphone is powered by Samsung’s TouchWIZ v3.0 technology which has a Widgets feature that enables users to have a selection of widget style mini applications open on its home screen. The Samsung Galaxy SL I9003 boasts a brilliant 4-inch Super Clear LCD capacitive touchscreen Gorilla Glass Display with 480 x 800 pixel resolution in 16-Million colors which provides a vivid, sharp color HD-like viewing experience and includes Accelerometer sensor for auto display rotate, Proximity sensor doe auto-display-trunoff, and touch sensitives keys at the bottom of device for menu, home, cancel and search functions.

The Samsung Galasy SL I9003 smartphone comes with 512-MB RAM, 1024 MB ROM, and sports microSD card slot with upto 32-GB capacity. A 16GB microSD card comes with the device. Available in Mirror Black with chrome colors, the Samsung Galaxy SL I9003 smartphone also includes FM radio with RDS, audio and video media players and runs Google Android 2.2 OS and offers a seven-paned home screen and access to Android Market to personalize the device with 115,000 free and paid applications, including applications for social networking, gaming, travel and more.

Android powered Samsung Galaxy SL I9003 Smartphone also includes a 5.0 megapixel autofocus camera with 2592 x 1944 pixel still picture resolution, digital zoom and autofocus, geo-tagging, and a video camera for recording crystal-clear, high-definition 1280 x 720 (720p) HD videos and photos for playback on an HD television. The handset also includes a front-facing VGA resolution camera for video calling over 3G network. Some of the Lifestyle features in Samsung Galaxy SL I9003 Smartphone include:

Samsung’s Social Hub – Built around messaging, contacts and calendar sync, which allows users to send and receive information, whether it is e-mail, social network updates or SMS messages.

The Samsung I9003 Galaxy SL is a victim of timing. The Samsung I9003 Galaxy SL is a fairly large phone – with a 4” screen it can’t help it. It’s not the lightest handset around but it gives a nice solid feeling, that the original Galaxy S somehow lacked.

Samsung Galaxy Fit Review

The Samsung Galaxy Fit is the latest offering from Samsung in the mid-range smartphone segment and it promises to be as exciting as the Samsung Galaxy S, which is the high-end offering that finally managed to kill the domination of the Apple iPhone. The Samsung Galaxy Fit will be having quite a lot of style going for it due to the incredible design of the phone. The rounded edges and the silver touches certainly exude upmarket feel for the phone, which is definitely not going to be presenting its competitors. The large touch screen display also forms the base for all the options that are present in the phone.

It is a 3.3 inch unit that is going to hold a great resolution with the view of providing incredible detail to the user, who might have not expected this level of options in a phone in this segment. The maximum resolution given out by the Samsung Galaxy Fit will be 240 x 320 pixels, which make the phone look extremely good overall. The Samsung Galaxy Fit will be offering the options like accelerometer and Swype text input method, which are normally present in the high-end phones like the Samsung Galaxy S. The Swype text input method especially is of great significance due to the fact that it will make the typing a whole lot easier, despite the lack of the physical full QWERTY keyboard. One just needs to swipe the screen in order to frame the word, which is going to be of great user friendliness for those constantly on the move.

The Samsung Galaxy Fit will be having limited amounts of memory internally. There will be only 160 MB present in the phone internally, which is not going to be sufficient for taking advantage of the options that are present in the phone. The Samsung Galaxy Fit will be offering the expandable memory option, which is going to help the phone realise the potential in the business and entertainment segment. Due to the presence of a vast number of applications as well as options like the five megapixel autofocus camera, the Samsung Galaxy Fit requires a lot of memory. The Samsung Galaxy Fit will be providing the phone with a 600 MHz processor, which is going to require decent amounts of power.

It will be supplied by the battery in the phone that is rated at 1350 mAh. This is an adequate battery inadequate battery for the phone, which is also explained by the almost 11 hours of talk time offered with the phone. It becomes even interesting to know that the phone will offer around seven hours of talk time even in the 3G mode, which is power sapping to say the least. The Samsung Galaxy Fit will be available in the UK for around £ 400 in the SIM free option, which makes it quite sensible by when compared with the most of the high-end phones that command a premium price tag with no appreciable increase in the features.

Samsung Galaxy Fit Specifications:
  • Dimensions: 0.34 x 2.41 x 0.50 inches (110.2 x 61.2 x 12.6 mm)
  • Weight: 3.82 oz (108 g)
  • Display: 3.3 inch LCD capacitive touchscreen display, 240 x 320 pixels
  • Memory: 160 MB + 32 GB MicroSD
  • OS: Android OS 2.2

Apple vs Samsung vs Motorola

As everyone already knows, Apple is suing Samsung for infringing upon the look of the iPhone 3G, along with multiple other suits. This, in turn, has created a hurricane of discussion over whether Apple is making the right move.

Regardless of the outcome, Samsung is finding itself in a not-so-great situation. This lawsuit will either tip Samsungs piggy bank into Apples pocket, or/and it will completely ruin the relationship between the two giants. And based on the fact that Samsung has a major role in building the toys at Apple, this would be a huge kick in the kahunas. Either way, Samsung is screwed.

Fortunately, I have the answer for Samsung, when it comes to the portion of the lawsuit over the physical design. All they need to do is sue Motorola.

The Motorola Atrix 4G, which can be found on the AT&T network, is an exact replica of the original line of Samsung Galaxy S phones. From the four in-screen buttons, which all perform the same functions, to the placement of the rear facing camera, the phones are nearly identical.

My point here is that Apple may have started World War 3, as I could spend all day pairing up phones with similar designs. I'm not discrediting any allegations of functionality thievery, but nearly every smart phone in our fine world is related to the next, in one way or another.

Samsung is shaking in its boots today, but Motorola better keep a watchful eye out, along with every other brand on the market. Theres a huge amount of infringment going on in the world of cell phones and if Apple walks away on top, we'll be talking real soon about the next allegation.

For the mean time, watch out Motorola, I just let Samsungs dog loose in your front yard.

Tablet Battle: The iPad 2 Vs. Motorola Zoom

The next generation of Apple's tablet PC, iPad 2 are waited by the rest of the world.Unveiled on March second, the iPad 2 features shows a lot of over its older brethren. Nevertheless it is yet to be seen if these improvements will be adequate to keep Apple's chunk of the tablet PC market intact. Back in 2010, the 1st iPad was a major hit with a worldwide sales around 14.8 million items. The first iPad was such a success with the estimated of 75% of the tablet Personal computer market are owned by Apple.

The iPad's commercial success nevertheless , has attracted many competitors. With so many firms joining the tablet bandwagon and building their own iPad killer version, many are keen to find out how the iPad 2 fares against the improving competition.

In this review we make a head-to-head comparison between iPad two and what many consider its strongest competitor to date, the Motorola Xoom.

1. Processor
The iPad 2 is fitted with Apple's dual-core 1GHz A5 chip, a big improvement from the prior iPad. The A5 chip claimed to be 10 times better graphical performance than the old iPad. We don't know for sure on the RAM size for the iPad two, but 512MB is a huge probability.

Motorola Xoom is kitted out with a 1GHz dual-core Tegra 2 CPU. At 1GB of RAM, this chip along with the Android 3.0 OS and make the tablet to multi task effortlessly. Advantage - Xoom

2. Display
The iPad 2 has the same 9.7-inch backlit-LED IPS display that may be found in iPad one which is wonderful because it remains the best in its class. The Xoom has a standard 10.1-inch TFT display. Excellent for browsing the net and watching films but does not offer the kinds of view positions we are used to in the iPad. Advantage -Apple iPad two

3. CameraOne of the largest flaws of the older iPad was the lack of a camera. Now iPad 2 has two cameras. The iPad 2's dual cameras are a 0.7-megapixel main camera with 720P movie capture capacity, and a secondary VGA camera that works fine if you'd like to use it for video calls. In this category, Xoom has a upper hand. With a formidable 5-megapixel main camera and are equipped with dual-LED flash and autofocus and a secondary 2-megapixel camera for video conferencing, the Xoom is certainly the winner here. Advantage - Motorola Xoom
